Artificial intelligence cannot be trusted until it earns credibility. Before it gains autonomy, it must first show verifiable evidence of integrity and human fit with the people who rely on it.

AI trust begins where technology meets human behaviour. It’s not enough for systems to work; people must experience them as reliable, transparent, and fair. Therefore, both humans and machines share responsibility for building trust.

Why Trust Must Be Measured

People earn trust through visible actions — and AI should do the same. Designers must ensure that algorithms are accountable to evidence: data that proves not only what they did, but also why.

To achieve this, trustworthy AI must include:

  • Transparency in how models are trained and tested.
  • Traceability of decisions across time and context.
  • Auditability for fairness, accuracy, and consistency.

Without clear evidence, AI’s ethics can’t be verified, and confidence quickly fades.

The Human Fit

Even when AI behaves correctly, people may still hesitate to trust it. This is the paradox of human fit — trust grows when machine behaviour feels understandable and consistent.

Therefore, designers must focus on perception, not just performance. AI earns confidence when it:

  • Explains its reasoning clearly.
  • Admits uncertainty when needed.
  • Corrects itself openly when mistakes occur.

Predictability Over Perfection

“AI trust is not about perfection; it’s about predictability,” writes Dr. Norrie. “Humans forgive mistakes they understand, but they fear what they cannot explain.”

The ‘Entire Game’ Analogy

Trust functions like a game: everyone must understand and follow the same rules. Designers must write AI’s rulebook in the same ethical language as its human users. As a result, the “entire game” becomes a shared framework — technical, psychological, and moral — where both people and machines keep outcomes fair.
