From the Desk of Dr. James Norrie
Artificial Intelligence is powerful—but it’s also prone to misuse, risk, and unintended consequences. Volume 2 of our “Safe & Secure Use of AI Tools” series lays down three core principles to help you use AI both safely and meaningfully, whether personally or professionally.
1. Be AI Safe & Secure
Think twice before sharing personal, confidential, or sensitive information with public AI systems. Once submitted, your data may be stored forever. This applies especially to private matters and children.
In the workplace, unregulated AI use can expose trade secrets or private data. Instead of banning AI, build clear guidance on permitted use to protect your organization’s integrity.
2. Demonstrate Provenance, Integrity & Accountability
Not all AI-generated content is reliable. Always check AI outputs for data provenance and accuracy. Blind trust can lead to serious consequences. For example, a legal brief generated by ChatGPT turned out to rely on fictional cases—an urgent cautionary tale for professionals.
3. Understand Information Warfare & Disinformation
AI can be weaponized for manipulation — spreading misleading or false content that influences public opinion. Individuals and organizations must build media literacy and digital resilience, ensuring that AI systems support transparency, fairness, and truthful decision-making.
